Green School Program
MCH is proud to announce our official involvement in King County Green Schools!
We have put together a Green Team comprised of passionate administration, maintenance,
and educational staff who are excited to see this project through. Our first official
meeting was on September 23, 2008. Much to our delight, we found we were well on
our way to becoming Level One Certified! King County Green Schools offer educational
resources, system support, cost savings, and recognition upon completion. Our
goal is to increase awareness and develop a cohesive system that
will assist staff, children, and parents in their green efforts at school
and home. We will be updating you regularly on our efforts.

UPDATE: September 1, 2009
This school year MCH would like parents and students to make an effort towards a waste-free
Wednesday every week! Information was sent to parents as part of the package sent out in mid-August.
It can also be found here.
UPDATE: July 7, 2009
Ms. Nicole has been selected to receive an ING Unsung Heroes Scholarship award. The award money
will be used by Ms. Nicole and Ms. Jessie to develop natural resource management curricula, looking at
water and power usage on campus. The school will be purchasing wetland and soil testing kits, solar
education kits including solar ovens, and a power house kit.
UPDATE: April 27, 2009
In recognition of our ongoing classroom waste reduction program and our desire to expand our school
sustainability programs, MCH was awarded two Terry Husseman Sustainable School Awards administered
through the WA Dept. of Ecology. The monies associated with these awards will be used to purchase
vermiculture (worm composting) bins, rainwater collection barrels, and more plants and seeds for the
school.
UPDATE: April 10, 2009
At MCH, outdoor education and earth appreciation is a big component of your child’s experience.
Earth Day is celebrated worldwide on Wednesday, April 22. MCH would like to recognize this
important day as a community with another waste-free Wednesday. During National Green week back
in February, MCH had its first waste-free Wednesday and the results were amazing! Trash was
reduced from an average of 23 pounds to 14! Buying foods like yogurt, applesauce and juice in
bulk and using Tupperware in lunches not only saves money, but it’s also one of many simple ways
to do your part for this amazing planet we call home. For more information about earth day,

UPDATE: Feb 6, 2009
Our efforts have paid off! King County has granted MCH a Level One Certification as a King
County Green School for our waste reduction efforts. Our recycling rate is now 48%! We
continue this momentum with a newfound focus on energy conservation and environmental education
to achieve the next certification level. Want to be involved? The Green Team seeks representatives
from the parent community!
