Kindergarten Program
(The Kindergarten populations of five-to-six year olds are fully integrated into
the Early Childhood classrooms.)
What makes Kindergarten at MCH extraordinary?
A child’s unique Kindergarten experience at MCH is the
culmination of his early childhood experiences. All Kindergartners attend
school full-time, Monday-Thursday 8:30-3:15, Friday 8:30-12:00.
Our certified Montessori teachers have a profound understanding
of children’s changing development. The Early Childhood program supports each
child’s growth from early childhood to school age. MCH’s specially
designed Kindergarten program nurtures the child’s emotional, physical, social
and cognitive development.
Kindergartners build both thinking and social skills through
close contact with the teacher, the materials of learning, and each other.
In Montessori Kindergarten, children are developing an astonishing array of
essential life skill. Learning is uninterrupted and self-regulated. Children
work purposefully on projects for as long as they wish, developing
concentration, perseverance and independence.
Working with the teacher, the child begins to set and attain academic, social
and emotional goals for herself. Children choose their own work according to
their goals and their personal interests. Time management, self-discipline
and personal accountability are emphasized through frequent, regular check-ins
with the teacher.
Instead of being “taught,” each child is led towards self-discovery of concepts
through use of materials. Multi-sensory materials are plentiful for
physical, scientific exploration. Rewards are intrinsic through success
with materials as children spot their own errors. A wide range of
materials are used for a wide range of capabilities.
During the Kindergarten year, literacy takes center stage in
the child’s life, both the classroom environment and during
individualized lessons, which include handwriting, journaling,
reading and word study.
The social life of the five and six year old begin to take precedence. This is
the time for children to begin experiencing true cooperation, collaboration,
compromise, and compassion. Individual and small group instruction are
experienced daily. Kindergartners collaborate and are a source of inspiration
for each other. As natural leaders in their class of two-and-a-half to six
year olds, Kindergartners develop patience, tolerance, and self-confidence
which lead to enhanced self-esteem.
During weekly session with the school-wide group of Kindergartners and the
Elementary class, the children study cultural topics from an anti-bias,
multi-cultural viewpoint. On these days, they also folk dance, eat lunch,
enjoy story time and share a PE class. These weekly sessions are led by the
Elementary teacher, and provide the Kindergartners a glimpse into the Elementary
class and many capable, older role models.

Parents of Kindergartners are saying…
“The Kindergarten year provided by Montessori Children’s House was a stimulating
and enjoyable experience for our daughter. Forming a natural bridge
between the Early Childhood and Elementary programs, it challenged our child to
reach upward to the next level of her educational development. The K-Year
greatly enhanced our child’s self-esteem and expanded her cultural horizons.” - David
“It was an easy decision to send Nat to Kindergarten at MCH. The school
provides a secure and friendly atmosphere. Nat often says that all the
kids in the class are his friends. He takes a lot of pride in his work and
has a great sense of accomplishment when he completes a task... The
hands-on learning experience is both stimulating and rewarding.” - Larissa
“I believe the Kindergarten program at MCH has helped develop
my son’s confidence and independence. He is getting the individual
attention children need, therefore he is doing exceedingly well with his reading
and math. He has shown great respect for others and enjoys helping out the
younger students. He is learning to become a role model for others.
We are very proud of what he has accomplished at MCH.” - Erin
