MCH Faculty and Staff
Each member of our staff community has a deep, longstanding commitment to the child. Lead teachers are certified by the American Montessori Society and regularly attend national and local education conferences. Our assistant teachers and child care staff are a vibrant, integral part of the MCH community. Our entire staff has been Positive Discipline certified and each is dedicated to the children and their unique, schooling experience. For consistency, our Before and After Care is staffed by classroom assistants and other full-time staff.
In addition to a deep commitment to authentic Montessori Methodology, we emphasize peace education and conflict resolution along with care for the world and all of its inhabitants.

Jennifer McConnell, Head of School
Hailing from UW, Head of School Jennifer McConnell has a background in business administration, sales, marketing and accounting. After earning her NAMTA Certificate in Montessori Administration, Jennifer took the helm at MCH, originally founded by her mother, Linda Baker. With 16 years at the school, Jennifer founded the Infant/Toddler program and the Middle School program at MCH, collaborated on the development of the Elementary program and managed the most recent campus expansion with addition of the newest building purposely designed to house the Elementary and Infant/Toddler programs. Jennifer’s “nature-inspired” vision for the school was the catalyst for introducing farm animals on campus and starting a hands-on garden for students. Under her direction, the school has grown from four classrooms to 12, and from 84 students to over 215 students. When not at school, Jennifer loves to garden, camp, read, and travel. Both her children are alumni of the school.

Angela Spayde, Assistant Head of School/Student Support Director/Middle School Art and Elementary Yoga Specialist
"The students at MCH are getting a one-of-a-kind educational experience," says Angela Spayde. "Students spend their days exploring their curiosities and acquiring academic skills in a fun, connected, and meaningful way." Before joining MCH in 2014, Angela was a fourth grade teacher and reading specialist at a school in Waltham, MA. Keely Strohl, Infant Toddler Program Director and Admissions Director
With an AMS certificate and BAS in Early Education, Keely Strohl has returned to MCH in the capacity of Infant Toddler Program Director and Admissions Director. Her favorite part about working at MCH is the family atmosphere and the love and support from the community and staff. In her free time, Keely enjoys going on city walks and exploring new neighborhoods. She also loves to travel with her children -- even if it's just a road trip to Portland or the ocean. Soccer is a big part of Keely's home life and everyone in her family loves to watch soccer games.

Melissa Brooks, Early Childhood Program Director
A native Eastsider and former Montessori child, Melissa is a passionate advocate of the Montessori method. With a Master’s Degree in Integrative Education from Endicott College and a theater degree from Cornish College of the Arts, Melissa has spent the last 20 years working with children in public and private schools as well as in the non-profit sector. A published author, trainer and presenter, she has toured nationally presenting at conferences on parent engagement in schools. She is a certified Master Teacher at the EC level and earned her Masters in Educational Leadership. During her acting career, Melissa was a regular on Seattle’s stages, as well as on film, appearing in short films and as Orlando Bloom’s sailing double in the blockbuster movie, Pirates of the Caribbean. In her spare time, Melissa is known to fire cannons from the main deck of our state’s tallship, The Lady Washington, where she has crewed since she was 15 years old. The mother of a current MCH student and an MCH alum, Melissa enjoys Mexican food, travel and spending time with friends and family.

Nicole Champoux, Elementary Program Director

Marc Cobb, Middle School Program Director and Lead Teacher
Starting off as an assistant teacher in an MCH toddler classroom almost a decade ago, Marc Cobb came home to open the MCH Middle School. After studying at the Houston Montessori Center, Marc received his Montessori Secondary I and II credential. Prior to that, Marc earned a BA in English Literature and Rhetoric/Creative Writing through the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Marc grew up in the Chicago suburbs, but after living in the Northwest, he discovered a deep love of the outdoors.

Angela Imes, Controller
With 18 years in public accounting and eight years running her own accounting practice, Angela brings her passion for education and numbers to MCH. In addition to her accounting background, Angels spent three years on the MCH Parent Association Board. A graduate of the University of North Texas, Angela says her favorite part of MCH is "The focus on teaching the whole child, emphasizing not just academics but social and emotional skills, fine arts, and environmental education.” Angela is a mom of four children, all whom attend MCH. Outside of MCH, Angela enjoys board games, cooking, reading and knitting.

Robin Clark, Financial Manager
With over 20 years in accounting, Financial Manager Robin Clark joined MCH in 2008. Robin studied business and accounting at the University of Montana and loves being a mom to her son, Austin and daughter, Paige, a former MCH student. Robin loves greeting MCH families everyday during arrival, in any weather! Outside of MCH, Robin likes to swim, cycle, travel, go to concerts and spend time with family.

Allison Sadler, Registrar
MCH employee and former MCH parent, Allison began her career in electrical engineering designing power and lighting for commercial and industrial buildings. With a degree from Vanderbilt University, this mom of three started working with MCH in 2008. Among her many duties at MCH, Allison is the registrar, unofficial goat herder and chicken chaser. Outside of MCH, Allison loves spending time with family and friends and is involved in her children’s after-school activities such as Lacrosse. All three of Allison's children attended MCH.

Julie Hicks, Office Manager
As one of the first people you see at MCH, Office Manager Julie Hicks is a welcome addition to our school. A native eastsider, Julie brings with her 22 years experience in the dental field specifically in orthodontics and oral surgery. The mother of two, Grandma and wife, Julie enjoys spending time with family, sewing, boating and watching movies. “The best part of being a part of MCH is being around the children in a natural, forested setting,” Julie says. One of Julie's grandchildren is a current MCH student.

Sara Davies, Co-lead Teacher in Ambarino
Sara has a BA in English and Secondary Education from WSU, and Montessori Education Institute of the Pacific Northwest. Before joining MCH, Sara worked at a therapeutic boarding school in Connecticut teaching English at the high school level. Sara loves seeing children make connections to the world around them and finds it rewarding to help children grow into confident individuals. In her free time, Sara enjoys singing, crafting, reading, baking and spending time with friends and family.
Sara has a BA in English and Secondary Education from WSU, and Montessori Education Institute of the Pacific Northwest. After earning a degree in education from Whitworth University, Cara is a welcome addition back in our Infant room. That's right -- Cara earned her Montessori certification years ago when she was MCH's first infant teacher. Cara attended Montessori school when she was a child. In fact, her first job was as an assistant teacher at the same Montessori school that she attended for preschool. Her favorite part of being a teacher is watching children discover what brings them true joy. Cara loves MCH's dedication to the education of "the whole child." In her free time, Cara enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, cooking, and doing anything creative. We are excited to welcome her back home to MCH!

Anna Turner was a nanny for nine years and taught at another local Montessori school before joining MCH. Anna loves the “amazing community that MCH has to offer.” With her own daughter currently enrolled in the early childhood program, Anna loves the nature aspect of MCH and enjoys spending time on the MCH Nature Trail, in the gardens and playgrounds. Outside of the classroom, Anna — along with her husband — enjoy spending time with their child outside in the Pacific Northwest.

Kaila Austin, Co-Lead Teacher in Celeste
Caring for students in our Celeste's classroom, Kaila Austin says her favorite part of MCH is everyone’s commitment to the children and creating a community at every age level. Before joining MCH, Kaila earned her degree in environmental justice and writing and worked in an infant room at a daycare in Olympia. In her spare time, Kalia enjoys photography and hiking.
Caring for students in our Celeste's classroom, Kaila Austin says her favorite part of MCH is everyone’s commitment to the children and creating a community at every age level. Jamey Powell, Co-Lead Teacher in Fucsia
Hawaii-native and Montessori child, Jamey brings a wealth of teaching expertise with her. She was the Co-Lead Teacher at a local Montessori School and was the Lead Teacher at a new toddler program in Pullman (which she helped develop and implement.) Also in Pullman, she was the Assistant Teacher at WSU’s Childrens Center where she worked for over three years. A graduate of WSU (with a BA in Human Development/Early Childhood Education and a minor in Psychology) Jamey trained at MEIPN and earned her Infant and Toddler teaching credential. Jamey’s favorite part of MCH is the peaceful and beautiful environment “both inside the classroom and out.” When she’s not teaching, Jamey spends time with her Shiba Inu/Australian Shepard dog, Koda, doing Yoga, Zumba and photography.

Stephanie Wooten, Co-Lead Teacher in Fucsia
Caring for the students in our Fucsia classroom is Stephanie Wooten. With experience working with youth in a community church and adults in a family home setting, Stephanie has been an active volunteer in the Thurston County Food Bank’s Nutrition Education program and their school gardens. With a BA in Education from Evergreen State College, Stephanie is earning her Masters in teaching, is certified in Infant Sleep Training. Her favorite part of MCH is the child-centered philosophy that “focuses on fostering independence in young students and treating them respectfully.” Stephanie also enjoys MCH's emphasis on learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom. In her spare time, Stephanie enjoys art including visual performance, make up, fashion, music and spending time with her awesome cat, Jasper.

After earning a BA in psychology from Northwest University, Katie tutored children with Autism, worked as a nanny and held various job titles at a day care facility. Katie grew up in Tanzania, Africa and was a “missionary kid” for most of her life. Katie loves interacting with the children at MCH and "watching them develop and grow." Her favorite part of MCH is the welcoming community. Outside of the classroom, Katie loves meeting friends and family for dinner (or coffee!) and enjoys hiking the Pacific Northwest.

Joan Dietrich, Early Childhood Co-Lead Teacher in Verde
Before discovering her passion for Montessori, Joan worked in a university library. Joan was trained at MEIPN and also holds a BA in English Literature. Co-leading our Verde classroom is certified Montessori teacher, Olivia Foort. After earning her BA in Theatre and Dance from Southern Illinois University, Olivia discovered a love of teaching and sought training at the Hope Montessori Educational Institute. Olivia's favorite part about teaching is seeing the ways children learn outside of direct adult influence; creative problem solving, and using Montessori works in new ways. "I get to be a safe person for so many young people, and to see them grow through such a formative stage is a special and humbling gift," she said. Olivia lives with her fiancé, Brian, and their cat, Pippa. She practices yoga, creating art and loves playing board games with friends.

Jihye started her Montessori journey at MCH as an assistant teacher in 2017 and soon after she fell in love with Montessori philosophy. Jihye earned her Montessori Early Childhood teaching credential through MEIPN/AMS and became a lead teacher in Amarillo in September 2019. She holds a Master's in Education (TESOL) from Seattle University and Bachelor's in English and Science. Before she found her passion for Montessori, she was an ESL teacher for a combined 7 years in the US, Korea, and Australia. Jihye has taught English and Digital Literacy to immigrants and refugees at the University of Washington before joining MCH. Jihye's favorite part of working at MCH is being surrounded around the diversity of the children and "the beauty of the school" itself. Because she is married to a chef, Jihye enjoys trying new and exciting cuisine and restaurants and also loves Korean movies and traveling.

Reilly Chamberlin, Early Childhood Assistant Teacher in Amarillo
After working at a Montessori Charter school in Southern California, Reilly moved up to the Pacific Northwest. Her favorite part of being at MCH is helping children grow and learn in “an environment that is full of positivity and endless support.” Outside of the classroom, Reilly enjoys reading (she’s a huge Harry Potter fan) writing her own stories and watching the latest Marvel movie.

Janell Kircher, Early Childhood School at Home Lead Teacher
Janell Kircher, has been a teacher for over 10 years and became a certified AMS Montessori teacher in 2009. In addition to teaching at MCH, Janell has been worked within the MCH Culinary Program and as a lunch and classroom aide. Her favorite part of MCH is the "green school" status and the implementation of "farm to table." Outside of the classroom, Janell is an avid knitter and loves exploring the many parks in our area. Both of Janell's children currently attend MCH. With a large, extended family, Janell has always enjoyed cooking and entertaining.

She has been a parent adviser at a Canadian elementary school with an emphasis on culture diversity, worked with students with learning and emotional challenges in California, and has been a valued part of MCH for years. As a former volunteer at an Issaquah elementary school, Sunanda is passionate about helping students become their personal best. In her spare time, Sunanda loves hiking and biking with her friends.

Shadow Lynn MacLean, Administrative Assistant
Currently earning her bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Shadow’s favorite part of teaching at MCH is watching the children grow as individuals and having their “ah-ha!’ learning moments. “As a mother and teacher, I know the importance of my role in the classroom to help the child have the best possible educational experience,” Shadow said. Shadow loves the community at MCH -- the parents, teachers, and administration -- and how they work together. Outside of classroom, Shadow enjoys being in nature with her three children and dog, Ozzy. She loves to crochet, knit and paint – that is, when she’s not making amazing special occasion cake creations for friends and family.

Tara Kirschenmann, Float Teacher
Tara has been with MCH for over ten years. Before joining MCH, Tara ran her own in-home childcare for 10 years while raising her three children. Previously, Robin worked as a Cognitive Development Specialist at a school in Massachusetts, where he also taught math, language and coached middle school basketball. After getting his BA in History at Santa Clara University, he worked at a private boarding school in Vermont as the Director of Student Life, a Remedial Language Specialist and soccer and basketball coach. After earning her BS in elementary education (with an endorsement in children's theatre and performing arts) from the University of New Mexico and her teaching license, Alyx taught 4th and 5th grade in Albuquerque at a project-based learning, multi-age community school. In 2014, Jessie launched a Montessori program for a small, rural beach community before moving back to MCH in 2019 into her new role as an Upper Elementary Lead. Jessie is passionate about teaching and says, “It’s a joy to find yourself witness to a student’s biggest successes and struggles.” Outside of MCH, Jessie enjoys beach combing, swimming, camping and taking her dog to visit NW rivers. Jessie is thrilled to be back with her MCH family.

After earning a BFA in film production, Amy went on to record two albums (available on iTunes) and played venues across the east coast and the Pacific NW. Amy brings an amazing excitement for music and singing to our school, which is apparent at every MCH event as she strums her guitar while the children perform. Her favorite part of teaching at MCH is being able to go into each classroom and share her love of music. "I love watching the students dance and sing, expressing themselves freely," she says. Amy's child has been a student at MCH for the last 12 years. When not at MCH, Amy explores her passion for reading tarot cards and enjoys drawing and cartooning.

When not leading students in art classes at MCH, Michelle loves to do pottery in her home art studio, work in her garden, and learn how to make cheese. He began detailing cars at age 17, eventually working his way up to Service Manager at an automotive repair shop where he worked for over for 14 years. With certifications from Ford Motor Company and Elite Service Masters, Ryan transitioned to his role at MCH to follow his passion for working outdoors. Ryan's favorite part of MCH is building things for the students and animals and "hearing the interests from the kids and answering their questions, which always brings a smile to my face." A father, grandfather and the husband of MCH's Head of School, Jennifer McConnell; Ryan loves spending time with his family, riding motorcycles, skiing and woodworking.
