  • Drive all the way to 219th street to turn around. Do not turn around in any driveways or in the middle of the road.
  • Pay attention to the staff wearing safety vests and follow their instructions.
  • Place your car tags in a visible location so that staff know where to guide you.
  • Always adhere to the 5MPH speed limit.
  • Do not pass traffic or do a U-Turn in the driveway.
  • Use your turn signal to indicate you are pulling out of a parking spot.
  • Do not park in staff parking spaces or the fire lane.

Women's History Month

Maria Montessori
Picture
Not only a pioneer in education, but also a pioneer in women’s rights, Dr. Maria Montessori’s life work has made waves all over the world. Dr. Montessori lived in Italy during a time when gender roles were sharply delineated. Growing up, Maria showed a deep interest in mathematics, and defied conventional barriers by pursuing a career in engineering early on. Later on, Maria decided that she wanted to enter the world of medicine, and overcoming countless obstacles, persisted in gaining entry into the University of Rome, an all male medical school.
The obstacles didn’t end there. While in University, Maria endured countless discriminatory expectations. Her father had to escort her to and from university, as it was socially unacceptable for a woman to walk alone in public. She was forced to wait outside of lecture halls while her male classmates chose their seats first, before she was allowed to enter as she was not supposed to interact with any of the men.

After defying all systems built to keep her out, Maria became Italy’s first female doctor and she didn’t stop there. Her medical path led her to a psychiatric clinic, which sparked a flame for her to deeply explore the needs of children with learning disabilities, eventually investing much of her time into her then radical and controversial theory that the lack of support for mentally and developmentally disabled children was the cause of their failure to thrive.

Maria used her understanding of science and systems, her deep care for those who were oppressed, her keen sense of scientific observation, and her passion for a better world to open her first school in 1907, Casa dei Bambini. Maria believed that children had the ability to educate themselves, and that the guides in their lives were the ones responsible for preparing the environment in which they could do so. 2 years later, Maria began training teachers in the approach she developed, and through many trials, tribulations, and iterations, here we are today, with her educational pedagogy still holding scientifically sound.

As we are highlighting remarkable women during March, we at Montessori Children’s House would like to thank Dr. Montessori for envisioning a better world for the way children learn and for inspiring the life’s work of countless people around the world who want to do the same.

In our Early Childhood classrooms, students are celebrating Women's History Month with books that highlight women and their accomplishments. In Nootka Rose, students love the book Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls, which is a compilation of bedtime stories featuring real-life women and their accomplishments.  If you and your child(ren) are interested listening, check out the Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls podcast!

Women's History Month

Picture
When discussing and celebrating womanhood, it feels intuitive to highlight the mothers, grandmothers, and woman-identifying guardians in our community. Part of the beauty of the Montessori philosophy is the potential it has to uplift and empower mothers to lean into our roles and nurture our children to realize their own potential. Here is a beautiful article on the subject of Montessori and motherhood by Elizabeth Tenety: "'Follow the Child': How a Montessori Mantra Changed My Motherhood".

Seattle Children's Theater Field Trip

On March 3rd, elementary students visited the Seattle Children's Theater in downtown Seattle to watch the play, "Carmela Full of Wishes". Students were encouraged to view the play with a director's eye, analyzing the way information was conveyed about the setting, conflict, etc. without always using real objects. For example, the actors demonstrated walking through a neighborhood by exiting through a door where the audience couldn't see them, then re-entering through a different door. The audience understands that the actors are not truly walking through a neighborhood but are able to suspend their disbelief to follow the story. Torin, a student in Horsetail, appreciated the way the main character used a scooter to show movement through the neighborhood. Students were also able to enjoy time outdoors playing in the fountain and admiring the Space Needle.

Driveway Safety
With the new staff parking area, we understand it can be tempting to drive around other cars in the roundabout. Please do not drive around other cars as it is a safety hazard. If you are pulling out of a parking space, please use your turn signal. Additionally, please remember to pay attention, listen, and be kind to our driveway staff. Their job is difficult and important!
Welcome to Our New Registrar: Tyler
Our previous Registrar, Allison, has finished her training with Tyler and will no longer be at MCH. We wish Allison the best in her journey with her family business. Tyler is now officially taking over the registrar position. If you have any questions, please reach out to him at tyler@mchkids.com.
CDC Announcement: Is my Covid test still valid if it's expired?
Since it takes time for test manufacturers to perform stability testing, the FDA typically authorizes at-home COVID-19 tests with a shelf-life of about four to six months from the day the test was manufactured, based on initial study results, and it may be extended later as additional data is collected.   You can check the Expiration Date column of the List of Authorized At-Home OTC COVID-19 Diagnostic Tests to see if the expiration date for your at-home OTC COVID-19 test has been extended and how to find any new expiration date.

Women's History Month

Picture
The past year has weighed heavy on our hearts with the continuing and escalating attacks on women’s bodily autonomy and the violence especially against women of color, trans/queer women, and disabled women. While it is imperative that we participate in the fight for equality in our daily lives, Women’s History Month is a great time to pay special attention to the fight for equality for women. After 67 years of celebrating International Women’s Day, educators in Santa Rosa, California came together in 1978 to dedicate the first week of March to Women’s History. This eventually became what we now know as Women’s History Month. These educators understood, just as we do at Montessori Children’s House, that women have been silenced and overshadowed throughout history despite playing and integral role in our world and society. Uplifting women’s voices and stories is essential to a well-rounded education rooted in conscientiousness. To quote world renowned activist, writer, and trailblazer Malala Yousafzai, “I raise up my voice—not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard…We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.”

If you’d like to learn more about this year’s theme, “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories”, check out the National Women’s History Alliance website. If you’re interested in integrating Women’s History Month into your lives at home, two great resources are VisitSeattle and National Geographic Kids.
Infant Classroom
Kinnikinnick
Just as with Black History Month, we make efforts throughout the entirety of the year to celebrate and uplift women's voices. In our infant classroom, Kinnikinnick, the children have been actively engaging with the women-focused books that have been out in the classroom. A particularly popular book amongst them is, "Maria", which tells the story of Maria Montessori's life. Integrating women's stories and voices into our children's lives is an integral part of growth and development.

Here are the books out in Kinnikinnick for Women's History Month:
  • Maria written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and illustrated by Raquel Martín
  • Think Big, Little One by Vashti Harrison
  • Dream Big, Little One by Vashti Harrison

The Suquamish Museum Field Trip

On March 2nd, our Cascara students were led on an amazing educational guided tour at the Suquamish Museum. Students learned about traditional historical cultural craft of the Suquamish such as weaving clothing and baskets, religious spiritual artifacts, historical artifacts of old cooking tools and methods, a timeline of the history of the Suquamish tribe, and the intricate carved canoes used as their mode of transportation. Oscar, one of the Cascara students, stated he was excited to learn about the many different tools the Suquamish invented and used historically for sewing, cooking, and crafting.

The Seattle Children's Theater Field Trip

On March 3rd, our elementary students visited the Seattle Children's Theater to watch a play. Tune in next week to hear more!
