Welcome to our weekly schedule for Amarillo!  If you are looking for more activities than are planned here, please visit our school at home handbook for more ideas to engage at home as well as this activities page.  There is a wealth of ideas to choose from!  Also, please don’t be afraid to repeat activities!  Repetition and continued practicing is a huge part of the Early Childhood curriculum.  It is absolutely ok and encouraged to go back to a previous day and continue to explore the same activity again.  This will continue to foster their focus and concentration through independent exploration- Something we strive for in our classrooms.  Please reach out if you have any questions or I can help in any way.

April 20-24, 2020 

​Monday, April 20th-

Morning Work Time- 9-11am
  • Let’s start the week of with some fun with Rock Scrubbing!  Head outside and find some rocks that could use a good wash, and then visit Bloomz to see how to get your rocks “Montessori clean”! Materials: several rocks, scrubber brush (old toothbrush also works), water in a big container and a towel 
  • Kindergarten Mtg- 9:45 am – 10:15 am and Isaac for 1:1 reading time with Primary Phonics after K meeting

Zoom Circle Time with Ms. Jihye- 11am
We will continue to talk about animals in the world and especially in Africa.  We will read a book about African Wildlife (safari, So Good!) and play an animal sound game.

Lunch/Outside time 12-1pm

Afternoon Work Time- 1-3pm
  • What should we do with those rocks once they are nice and clean and dry?  Why paint them of course!  When you are done, play hide and seek in your house, or leave them out for a neighbor.  Materials: rocks, paint brush or old toothbrush, paint.  If you don’t have paint at your house- that’s ok!  Just use water and watch your paintings slowly disappear!  I will demonstrate this technique on Bloomz.

Tuesday, April 21st-

Morning Work Time- 9-11am
  • This morning’s is all about different temperatures.  Have you found something too hot, or too cold?  Let’s explore together!  Materials: warm/hot water, icy water and food color, watercolor or paint.
  • Art with Ms. Michelle-  Earth Day Collage.  you will need: paper, pencil or colored pencil, something round to trace (for your earth shape), glue stick or glue, old magazines to cut up, and green and blue paper (construction paper or green and blue colored pictures from magazines, cut or ripped into small pieces) if you don't have green and blue paper, you can color or paint your earth green and blue.
  • Zoom Conferences 10:00 am – 11:00 for students. Please look for signups on Bloomz.  

Bloomz Spanish Circle Time with Mr. Shawn- 11am

Hola!  Mr. Shawn will be focusing this week on different parts of the body in Spanish.

Wednesday, April 22nd- Happy Earth Day!!

Morning Work Time- 9-11am
  • This morning, come over to our Bloomz video and see if you can guess how many??- We will be playing an estimating Game.  Material needed: a small jar or clear glass with some small objects or snacks (goldfish crackers, skittles and M&M’s all work great)
  • Kindergarten Mtg- 9:45 am – 10:15 am and Maddie for 1:1 reading time with Primary Phonics after K meeting

Bonus!  Cooking with Ms. Michelle- Did someone say Pizza?? 
You will need-  for the dough*:
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 pkg/1 Tbsp yeast
  • 2tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups warm, not hot, water
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • *If you can't find yeast and flour, or don't want to make the dough, you can buy premade pizza dough 
  • Toppings:
    • sauce, your favorite tomato sauce, pesto, cream sauce, olive oil and garlic, or any other sauce
    • Mozzarella or any blend of good melting cheese
    • toppings, you can put almost anything on a pizza from your traditional pepperoni, tomato, bell peppers, mushroom, basil, and garlic, or be really creative and use roasted beets, kale, and goat cheese, or even roasted sweet potatoes, be creative! 


Zoom Circle Time with Ms. Jihye- 11am
We will continue to talk about animals in the world and especially in Africa.  We will read (Safari, So Good! and play an animal riddle game.

Lunch/Outside time 12-1pm

Afternoon Work Time- 1-3pm
  • I can’t wait to share this Earth Day special activity!!  Materials: you only need three paper signs for Compost, Garbage, and Recycle.

Special MCH Connection Series- 4pm
Join us for a live concert from the MCH Facebook page on the MCH Nature Trail from local celebrated author, storyteller and children’s musician Eric Ode.  We will also be filming the concert for those that can’t make it live.  Help us celebrate 50 years of Earth Day as a community!


Thursday, April 23rd-

Morning Work Time- 9-11am
  • Today will visit schools in Africa!  Come with me as we check out Rain School.  Materials needed: prepare for drawing and coloring about your favorite part of school. Activity posted on Bloomz.
  • Zoom Conferences 10:00 am – 11:00 am for students.  Please look for signups on Bloomz.   

Bloomz Music Circle Time with Ms. Amy- 11am
This week our music circle will focus on Earth Day. From the smallest inchworm to the cosmic movement of the stars, we will sing about our beloved planet. Miss Pigadilly joins in the celebration by singing about a subject that is dear to her heart - dirt.

Lunch/Outside time 12-1pm * Live Zoom: Lunch Story Time with Ms. Reilly at 12pm

Afternoon Work Time- 1-3pm
  • This afternoon we will stay in Africa with a video of a Giraffe Craft. Materials: yellow colored paper or use white paper and color yellow, one of the brown colored pompoms, beads, or paper and pencil, glue, and scissors.
  • Kindergarten PE- Join Ms. Katherine in the Kindergarten Resource group in Bloomz at 2:15pm while the Kindergarteners will get to make their very own jump rope, and practice!  Materials needed- Old tee shirts or plastic bags, Scissors, Duct tape or masking tape 
 

Friday, April 24th-

Morning Work Time- 9-11am
  • What sound is it?  This morning we will be exploring our Sound of the Week “Vv”.  Materials needed: find objects that start with “v”
  • Gardening with Ms. Katherine- Check out Ms. Katherine’s video on soil investigation and how to make your very own worm jar!  For those that would like to create one at home, you will need: 4 clear jars or cups, garden soil, dried leaves or shredded paper (no ink or bleach preferred), 3 worms (digging for worms is fun!  Or, you can go outside when it gets dark with a flashlight after it rains and they will be resting on the surface and you can catch them!), 3-5 small pieces of kitchen food scraps
  • Kindergarten Mtg- 9:45 am – 10:15 am and Ethan for 1:1 reading time with Primary Phonics after K meeting

Zoom Circle Time with Ms. Jihye- 11am
We will talk about Life in Africa reading a book called “First Atlas.” And talk about similarities and differences about schools, weather, water system and more. 

Lunch/Outside time 12-1pm

Afternoon Work Time- 1-3pm
  • This afternoon is all about finding letters. Materials: chalk or marker and paper. Activity posted on Bloomz.

Monday, April 27th-
Morning Work Time- 9-11am
  • 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 
  • Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Mindfulness walk.  In this sensorial activity, take your student on a walk outside.  While walking, start a conversation with them about what they are hearing, seeing, feeling, tasting, and touching.  If they get stuck, point something out to them to incite their wonder.  I will be sharing a guided prompt along with this video.
  • Morning check-ins, follow ups 9:00-9:30 *I will reach out to schedule these as needed for your child.  
  • Kindergarten Mtg- 9:30-10:00
  • Parent zoom meetings- 10:00-11:00 Parent zooms will be a signup on Bloomz

    • What you will need:
      • -butter or non-stick cooking spray
      • -8 oz spaghetti regular or gluten free or other thin noodles 
      • -2 cups fresh or frozen spinach, if using frozen spinach, thaw and squeeze out the water (or you could leave out the spinach)
      • -1 cup Parmesan or mozzarella cheese
      • -salt
      • -2 Tbsp whole milk, 1/2&1/2 or cream
      • -1 egg
      • -olive oil
      • -2 cups spaghetti sauce
      • -mini-mozzarella balls, cherry tomatoes or mini meat balls for the eggs

Come hang out with me on Zoom for live circle time!  We will be learning all about famous landmarks in Africa.

  • Afternoon Activity with Ms. Joan-  Rain, Rain, Go Away…. We are hoping the rain stops this afternoon, but just in case- have fun with this umbrella color by the number printable!  Items needed: paper (printable), colored pencils or crayons
  • Afternoon Check-ins, follow ups 1:00-2:00 *I will reach out to schedule these as needed for your child.

Tuesday, April 28th-

  • 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 
  • Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Compare your shadows!  Go outside and lay down.  Have someone trace your body outline.  Then stand up and trace your shadow… Which one is bigger?  This is a great lesson for comparison and deductive reasoning.  This also can turn into a measuring activity as well to incorporate math!  Materials needed- Chalk.

  • Morning Lessons-

Bloomz Spanish Circle Time with Mr. Shawn- 11am
This week Mr. Shawn will be talking about Spring weather and the parts of the flower.  He will include printouts in his post, but students won’t need anything while at the lesson, except their voices!

Afternoon Work Time- 1-3:30pm
  • Afternoon Activity with Ms. Joan-  Can you make ice melt faster? See if any different substances make ice melt faster than others… Items needed: ice cubes, three bowls, salt, small amount of sand, or anything else you would like to try!
  • Afternoon Lessons-

  • 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 
  • Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Race to spot the most critters!  Find a spot in your yard and sit and be still.  Set a timer for 5 minutes and call out all of the critters you see.  Be sure to look above and below you, you might be surprised what you notice!  This activity sharpens observation skills as well as opens the door for conversations surrounding native animals in our area.  You can also have older children write down everything they saw, or even write a story using those animals.

  • Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Play Follow the Leader.  This classic game can be silly, fun, engaging and more for Early Childhood Students.  Especially when their parents really get into it!  Take turns being the leader outside as you explore your yard.  This sort of mimicking is really great for EC students, as it challenges and strengthens their processing skills as well as works to further develop gross motor and balancing skills.

  • 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 
  • Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Writing your ABC’s with a stick in the dirt. This simple activity uses a different part of the brain when you engage the whole body in writing!  This helps solidify initial sounds for students.  If they aren’t writing letters on their own, write the letter for them and have them trace it.  Can you get through the whole alphabet?

  • Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Writing your ABC’s with a stick in the dirt. This simple activity uses a different part of the brain when you engage the whole body in writing!  This helps solidify initial sounds for students.  If they aren’t writing letters on their own, write the letter for them and have them trace it.  Can you get through the whole alphabet?

  • Gardening with Ms. Katherine-  Learn how to make your very own worm jar!  For those that would like to create one at home, you will need: 1 jar with a lid and holes in the top (I use a mason jar with two part ring lid and a paper towel), 1 cup of garden soil, dried leaves or shredded paper (no ink or bleach preferred), 3 worms (digging for worms is fun!  Or, you can go outside when it gets dark with a flashlight after it rains and they will be resting on the surface and you can catch them!), 3-5 small pieces of kitchen food scraps

Today we will be learning a new song “Farmer Plants the Seeds” and the life cycle of a plant.

Special MCH Connection Series- 4pm
  • Island Project Celebration Parade at MCH!  Please come and celebrate our 6th grade students as they have completed their year long Island Project!!!!  We normally have a huge presentation and celebration to mark this culminating project, and we can’t this year.  In order to still be able to celebrate our students, we are inviting you to participate in our first ever Island Project Parade around the turn around at MCH.  Details as far as what to expect will be coming soon!  Our 6th graders can’t WAIT to celebrate with you!

Once that object is safely hidden away, yell, “Wake up!” The sleepyhead has to figure out which item was stolen (and if you have more than two players, who was the bear). Take turns so everyone gets a chance to play at being a sneaky bear. If you like, add a search for the missing item to this tricky activity.

  • Thematic Curriculum Lesson with Ms. Melissa- Join me as we talk about herbivores vs. carnivores.  Sorting activity provided
  • Bonus- Cooking with Ms. Michelle- Is moved to today because we missed Monday!  This week we will learn how to make Kimchi, a healthy and delicious fermented food.
For this project you will need:
  • -a medium-large head of napa cabbage
  • -3-4 Tbsp salt (don't worry, most of it gets rinsed off!)
  • -a large daikon radish or several small radishes, you want about 1/2 cup shredded
  • -2 medium carrots
  • -2 green onions
  • -2 Tbsp fish sauce, or you can substitute soy sauce or coconut aminos
  • -1-2 Tbsp red pepper flakes or sriracha sauce
  • -1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger

  • Gardening with Ms. Katherine-  This week we will plant a “three sisters garden” at the school of corn, beans and squash. Traditionally grown together by Native Americans, these crops benefit each other and the grower. Corn provides a stalk for beans to climb, beans provide nitrogen for the corn and squash, and the squash provides a leaf cover to retain moisture and prevent weeds.

  • Thematic Curriculum Lesson with Ms. Melissa- Welcome to North America! We will be making our way through the first half of a book- “North America A-Z”.  Using story paper, draw a picture of the coolest thing you learned and write a sentence or story about it.

This is an easy way to do printmaking at home without a lot of big and expensive equipment, and the prints will look really cool when you're finished! For this project you will need: paper, a piece of cardboard larger than your paper, paint (tempera or acrylic), a roller or paintbrush, something to put your paint on, a large paper plate or another piece of cardboard will work, a pencil or colored pencil

You will need: cotton balls, preferably smaller ones, cardstock, thick paper, or a paper plate for the body, glue(not a glue stick), black marker crayon colored pencil or paint, scissors or pin poking equipment , if you have clip clothespins you can use them for the feet so your sheep will stand up, otherwise just use your thick paper, a ribbon or string for a collar(optional)

  • 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule.

  • Thematic curriculum with Ms. Melissa- Family Field Day!  Check your packets for everything you need to create your very own family field day, including signs for activities, decorations, and even metals for the winners you can make out of chocolate bars!  I will post a video in the morning talking about all of the fun we can have “together” for our super fun end of the year celebration!
Zoom Circle Time with Ms. Jihye- 11am
Please join the last Amarillo circle time of the year! Amarillo children will teach their favorite works of the year to their peers. I cannot wait to learn about their lessons!

Drive Through Kindergarten Move on/up ceremony!  Join us as we go live on Facebook as our staff and faculty line the driveway as we celebrate our Kindergarteners while they “drive through” socially distant style.  CONGRATULATIONS KINDERGARTENERS!!!
