Welcome to our weekly schedule for Rojo!  If you are looking for more activities than are planned here, please visit our school at home handbook for more ideas to engage at home as well as this activities page.  There is a wealth of ideas to choose from!  Also, please don’t be afraid to repeat activities!  Repetition and continued practicing is a huge part of the Early Childhood curriculum.  It is absolutely ok and encouraged to go back to a previous day and continue to explore the same activity again.  This will continue to foster their focus and concentration through independent exploration- Something we strive for in our classrooms.  Please reach out if you have any questions or I can help in any way.

April 20-24, 2020    

Monday, April 20th-
Morning Work Time- 9-11am

• Please join me for a morning video on Bloomz as I show everyone a Montessori Staple material- Pin Pushing!  Materials needed- Push pin, paper and a marker
• Kindergarten Mtg- 9:45-10:45 We will be checking Homework, read more sight words and practice putting them in sentences, review nouns, practice multiplication board.

Bloomz Spanish Circle Time with Mr. Shawn- 11am
Hola!  Mr. Shawn will be focusing this week on different parts of the body in Spanish. 

Lunch/Outside time 12-1pm

Afternoon Work Time- 1-3pm

• This afternoon we are going to learn how to sew our very own bean bag! Materials- needle, thread and two small pieces of fabric

Tuesday, April 21st-
Morning Work Time- 9-11am

• Tuesday’s morning Bloomz lesson will be on one of my favorite Montessori Materials- Color Box Two.  In this activity, we will be matching different colors.  Materials Needed- 2 by 2 inches of colored paper, or blank pages that can be colored in with Purple, Blue, Pink, Red, yellow, orange, green, white, brown, grey
• Follow up fun YouTube video on Kids Science experimenting with colors

Bloomz Music Circle Time with Ms. Amy- 11am
This week our music circle will focus on Earth Day. From the smallest inchworm to the cosmic movement of the stars, we will sing about our beloved planet. Miss Pigadilly joins in the celebration by singing about a subject that is dear to her heart - dirt.

Lunch/Outside time 12-1pm

Afternoon Work Time- 1-3pm

• Continuing exploring colors, we will be doing an egg carton coloring activity.  Materials needed: old egg cartons, paint and paint brush
• Zoom Conferences for children and parents. 1PM-2PM for children and 2:05-4:05 PM for parents. Look for the signups on Bloomz.
• Kindergarten Nature Club- Join Ms. Katherine in the Kindergarten Resource group in Bloomz at 2:15pm while the Kindergarteners get to make bird feeders for your yard! You will need: Dried/open pinecone or toilet paper roll, Peanut butter or alternative butter, Bird seed or other seeds you have at home, Twine

 

Wednesday, April 22nd- Happy Earth Day!!
Morning Work Time- 9-11am

• This morning we will be exploring the mathematical concept of graphingwith what I like to call- Candy Graph!  Materials needed- jelly beans/ colored beads/ M& M’s/ skittles and graph paper (you are welcome to hand draw).
• Kindergarten Mtg- 9:45-10:15  We will check homework, read the next Primary Phonics book, practice taking dictation words, short sentences. Practice Static and Dynamic Addition with Golden Beads
• Gardening with Ms. Katherine- Check out Ms. Katherine’s video on soil investigation and how to make your very own worm jar!  For those that would like to create one at home, you will need: 4 clear jars or cups, garden soil, dried leaves or shredded paper (no ink or bleach preferred), 3 worms (digging for worms is fun!  Or, you can go outside when it gets dark with a flashlight after it rains and they will be resting on the surface and you can catch them!), 3-5 small pieces of kitchen food scraps

Bonus!  Cooking with Ms. Michelle- Did someone say Pizza?? 

• You will need-  for the dough*:
• 3 1/2 cups flour
• 1 Tbsp sugar
• 1 pkg/1 Tbsp yeast
• 2tsp salt
• 1 1/2 cups warm, not hot, water
• 3 Tbsp olive oil

                         *If you can't find yeast and flour, or don't want to make the dough, you can buy premade pizza dough 

• Toppings:
  • sauce, your favorite tomato sauce, pesto, cream sauce, olive oil and garlic, or any other sauce
  • Mozzarella or any blend of good melting cheese
  • toppings, you can put almost anything on a pizza from your traditional pepperoni, tomato, bell peppers, mushroom, basil, and garlic, or be really creative and use roasted beets, kale, and goat cheese, or even roasted sweet potatoes, be creative! 

 
Zoom Circle Time with Ms. Sunanda- 11am
Today we will read the story of the lion and mouse with puppets. I will also happily send a printout of a lion and a mouse if you want to make your own puppets for circle time.

Lunch/Outside time 12-1pm

Afternoon Work Time- 1-3pm

• This afternoon we will be practicing counting in groups of 5.  This activity is appropriate for all ages, as even those who already know how to count can practice their skip counting skills.  Materials needed: Cheerios/Macaroni
• Zoom Conferences for children and parents. 1-2 Pm for kids 2:05-4:05 for parents.  Look for signups in Bloomz.

Special MCH Connection Series- 4pm
Join us for a live concert from the MCH Facebook page on the MCH Nature Trail from local celebrated author, storyteller and children’s musician Eric Ode.  We will also be filming the concert for those that can’t make it live.  Help us celebrate 50 years of Earth Day as a community!
 
Thursday, April 23rd-
Morning Work Time- 9-11am

• This morning we will be exploring the parts of volcano and making our own booklet. I will send a scanned copy of the blank volcano parts to be colored and labelled. Materials needed- Printed PDF and colored pencils.

Zoom Circle Time with Ms. Sunanda- 11am
This will be a very special circle as we talk about an active volcano right in our state- Mount St Helens!

Lunch/Outside time 12-1pm

Afternoon Work Time- 1-3pm

• This afternoon we will be making origami volcanos.  Materials Needed- 8 ½ by 11 colored or white paper, colored pencils
• Zoom Conferences for children and parents.1-2 PM for kids and 2:05-4:05PM for parents.  Look for signups in Bloomz
• Kindergarten PE- Join Ms. Katherine in the Kindergarten Resource group in Bloomz at 2:15pm while the Kindergarteners will get to make their very own jump rope, and practice!  Materials needed- Old tee shirts or plastic bags, Scissors, Duct tape or masking tape. 

 

Friday, April 24th-
Morning Work Time- 9-11am

• This morning we will focus on all things ‘v’- our sound of the week!  Trace the sound at your home using corn flour, sand, rice, or even shaving cream!
• Art with Ms. Michelle-  Earth Day Collage.  you will need: paper, pencil or colored pencil, something round to trace (for your earth shape), glue stick or glue, old magazines to cut up, and green and blue paper (construction paper or green and blue colored pictures from magazines, cut or ripped into small pieces) if you don't have green and blue paper, you can color or paint your earth green and blue.
• Kindergarten Mtg- 9:45-10:15.  We will check homework, read about Rocks and minerals, and introduce Golden Bead multiplication.

Zoom Circle Time with Ms. Sunanda- 11am
To wrap up the week, we will talk about the most fun activity your child had done this week.  I will also help your child write a sentence about it to share.

Lunch/Outside time 12-1pm

​Afternoon Work Time- 1-3pm

• Please join me for a very special afternoon activity.  We will be making cards for our friends over at the  Aegis Living Community in Redmond to brighten their day.  Materials needed- Cardstock paper, colored pencils, markers, crayons and any other decorations that may be put on a card.
• Zoom Conferences for children and parents 1-2 Pm for kids 2:05 – 4:05 for parents.  Look for signups in Bloomz.

Monday, April 27-
Morning Work Time- 9-11am

• 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 
• Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Mindfulness walk.  In this sensorial activity, take your student on a walk outside.  While walking, start a conversation with them about what they are hearing, seeing, feeling, tasting, and touching.  If they get stuck, point something out to them to incite their wonder.  I will be sharing a guided prompt along with this video.
• Kindergarten Mtg- 9:00-9:30
• Morning check-ins, follow ups, parent zoom meetings- 10:00-11:00 *I will reach out to schedule these as needed for your child.  Parent zooms will be a signup on Bloomz

Bonus! Cooking with Ms. Michelle - Join Ms. Michelle on her Bloomz video as she makes Spaghetti Nests with Eggs!
What you will need:

• -butter or non-stick cooking spray
• -8 oz spaghetti regular or gluten free or other thin noodles 
• -2 cups fresh or frozen spinach, if using frozen spinach, thaw and squeeze out the water (or you could leave out the spinach)
• -1 cup Parmesan or mozzarella cheese
• -salt
• -2 Tbsp whole milk, 1/2&1/2 or cream
• -1 egg
• -olive oil
• -2 cups spaghetti sauce
• -mini-mozzarella balls, cherry tomatoes or mini meat balls for the eggs

This week Mr. Shawn will be talking about Spring weather and the parts of the flower.  He will include printouts in my post, but students won’t need anything while at the lesson, except their voices!

• 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 
• Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Compare your shadows!  Go outside and lay down.  Have someone trace your body outline.  Then stand up and trace your shadow… Which one is bigger?  This is a great lesson for comparison and deductive reasoning.  This also can turn into a measuring activity as well to incorporate math!  Materials needed- Chalk.

• Afternoon Activity with Ms. Joan-  Can you make ice melt faster? See if any different substances make ice melt faster than others… Items needed: ice cubes, three bowls, salt, small amount of sand, or anything else you would like to try!

Wednesday, April 29th-
Morning Work Time- 9-11am

• 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 
• Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Race to spot the most critters!  Find a spot in your yard and sit and be still.  Set a timer for 5 minutes and call out all of the critters you see.  Be sure to look above and below you, you might be surprised what you notice!  This activity sharpens observation skills as well as opens the door for conversations surrounding native animals in our area.  You can also have older children write down everything they saw, or even write a story using those animals.

• 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 
• Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Play Follow the Leader.  This classic game can be silly, fun, engaging and more for Early Childhood Students.  Especially when their parents really get into it!  Take turns being the leader outside as you explore your yard.  This sort of mimicking is really great for EC students, as it challenges and strengthens their processing skills as well as works to further develop gross motor and balancing skills.

Come and join me live on Zoom for all things transportation!  I will send a coloring sheet home on Tuesday for you to print and bring your colored buses to circle!

• 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 
• Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Writing your ABC’s with a stick in the dirt. This simple activity uses a different part of the brain when you engage the whole body in writing!  This helps solidify initial sounds for students.  If they aren’t writing letters on their own, write the letter for them and have them trace it.  Can you get through the whole alphabet?

Monday, May 4th -
Morning Work Time- 9-11am

• 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 
• Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Painting rocks for your neighbors!  Spend a little bit of time finding some rocks that you can paint, and then place around the neighborhood for your neighbors to find when they are out walking.
• Living/Non Living Lesson with Ms. Melissa- Check out this introductory lesson on zoology classification!  There is a half sheet of paper provided in your packet with living and non-living pictures for your child to color, cut and sort!
• Kindergarten Mtg- 9:00-9:30 
• Morning check-ins, follow ups, parent zoom meetings- 10:00-11:00 *I will reach out to schedule these as needed for your child.  Parent zooms will be a signup on Bloomz
• Bonus! Cooking with Ms. Michelle – Happy Cinco De Mayo! Join Ms. Michelle on her Bloomz video as she teaches you how to make fresh guacamole! 

You will need:

• -2-3 RIPE avocados (You can buy green avocados and they should be ready in 2-3 days)
• -Limes
• -Salt & Pepper
• -cumin powder
• -fresh cilantro
• -onion (any color)
• -garlic
• -tomato
•  -jalapeno or other chili (optional)
•  -tortilla chips for dipping, or you can put it on tacos, enchiladas or toast

This week Mr. Shawn will be talking about all thing weather.  He has a printout to share and will post that in the morning so that you have time to print for circle. The school will happily provide any Spanish printouts in your child’s packet starting on May 15th.

• Afternoon Activity with Ms. Joan- Who is ready for a scavenger hunt?  Find 5 living and non-living things in your home.  Draw or write their names!  (No materials provided for this activity)

Tuesday, May 5th -

• 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 

• Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Create your own animal habitat in your own backyard.  Gather up animal toys you have at home and bring them outside.  Can you find a spot to create a farm/jungle/forest home for your friends?  See what you can bring to make the scene even more awesome!  Could you build a fence to keep them safe?  A home for a human friend?  Have fun today using your imagination…
• Do you know what the difference between a vertebrate and invertebrate is?  Watch Ms. Melissa’s lesson and find out!  Materials: ½ sheet of paper with vertebrates and invertebrates to color, cut out and sort.

• Kindergarten Nature Club- Join Ms. Katherine in the Kindergarten Resource group in Bloomz at 2:15pm. Learn about where our clothes come from. Discuss synthetic and natural fibers. Make a loom with sticks and yarn to make your very own nature fabric! You will need 4 sticks approximately 1’, twine or yarn and an array of pieces of nature to weave into the loom; long blades of grass, flowers, twigs, leaves, bark or roots. Have fun!

Wednesday, May 6th -
Morning Work Time- 9-11am

• 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 
• Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa-  The weatherman says it might be rainy today- so let’s do indoor recess, Mission Impossible style!  For this, all you need is a bunch of string or yarn.  Find a hallway and tape one long string back and forth down the hall in all sorts of ways, like lasers guarding a museum.  Have your preschooler try and get through without setting off the “alarm”.
• The 5 different types of vertebrates are called “5 kingdoms”.  Let’s see what they are! Materials: full sheet of paper to color, cut and sort.

Zoom Circle Time with Ms. Sunanda- 11am- Join me in celebrating Vidur’s Birthday. Today is our show and tell day. Please share objects or pictures you may have that has an ‘x” in it.

• Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa-  Spray bottle letter hunt.  Do you have an old spray bottle lying around?  Fill it up with water and head outside.  Take a piece of chalk and write letters all over the yard- swing set, deck, trees, house, garage, etc.  Call out a letter and have your child find it and then spray it until it is gone! Materials: Spray bottle, chalk
• What is an Insect?  This morning we will learn the characteristics of an insect, and we will build our very own ant!  (1/2 sheet of paper provided) Materials: Scissors, glue stick.

• Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Garden flower 10 frame.  Collect 5 sticks- one long, and 4 shorter.  Lay the long one horizontally, and the others across vertically, making 5 spaces on the top, and 5 on the bottom.  Find 10 dandelion flower tops, and count to ten placing them in each space.  See if you can keep going!
• Let’s explore the life cycle of the ant.  Printables- life cycle wheel, booklet, and a is for ant color and tracing. Materials needed- colored pencils, scissors, glue stick

• Art with Ms. Michelle- For art this week we will be making an African sunset picture with animal silhouettes.  You will need: Paper, preferably larger like 11x17 but 8x10 will work, red orange yellow and black soft pastels, plain cheap hairspray like rave or aquanet (to seal the pastel) *if you don't have pastels, you can use red, orange, and yellow watercolor and a black pencil, crayon, or marker for the animals

 
Zoom Circle Time with Ms. Sunanda- 11am- Help me solve some animal riddles and learn how to use a square shape to draw a panda. Materials – pencil, eraser and color pencils.

Island Project Celebration Parade at MCH!  Please come and celebrate our 6th grade students as they have completed their year long Island Project!!!!  We normally have a huge presentation and celebration to mark this culminating project, and we can’t this year.  In order to still be able to celebrate our students, we are inviting you to participate in our first ever Island Project Parade around the turn around at MCH.  Details as far as what to expect will be coming soon!  Our 6th graders can’t WAIT to celebrate with you!

• Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa- Sleepy Bear Game!  Tell your child to set out three objects (like a ball, a shovel, and a toy car) before “going to sleep” under a blanket. Then along comes the sneaky bear — you or someone else in your household — to steal one item. Once that object is safely hidden away, yell, “Wake up!” The sleepyhead has to figure out which item was stolen (and if you have more than two players, who was the bear). Take turns so everyone gets a chance to play at being a sneaky bear. If you like, add a search for the missing item to this tricky activity.
• Thematic Curriculum Lesson with Ms. Melissa- Mt. St. Helens eruption anniversary!  Build your own volcano activity worksheet provided.

  • -cream cheese or peanut butter (to stick the veggies together)
  • -1 or more round thing to slice, like cucumbers, apples, oranges, kiwis, or radishes
  • -smaller round fruits or veggies like grapes, blueberries, or cherry tomatoes
  • -something to use for the eyes like raisins, mini-chocolate chips, or they sell sugar eyes in the baking aisle near the sprinkles
  • -chives to make the antennas (optional, but adds a nice finishing touch)

• Gardening with Ms. Katherine-  This week we will plant a “three sisters garden” at the school of corn, beans and squash. Traditionally grown together by Native Americans, these crops benefit each other and the grower. Corn provides a stalk for beans to climb, beans provide nitrogen for the corn and squash, and the squash provides a leaf cover to retain moisture and prevent weeds.
• Bonus- Cooking with Ms. Michelle- Is moved to today because we missed Monday!  This week we will learn how to make Kimchi, a healthy and delicious fermented food.

For this project you will need:

• -a medium-large head of napa cabbage
• -3-4 Tbsp salt (don't worry, most of it gets rinsed off!)
• -a large daikon radish or several small radishes, you want about 1/2 cup shredded
• -2 medium carrots
• -2 green onions
• -2 Tbsp fish sauce, or you can substitute soy sauce or coconut aminos
• -1-2 Tbsp red pepper flakes or sriracha sauce
• -1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger
• -2-3 cloves fresh garlic
• -1 tsp sugar

• Art with Ms. Michelle- Make your own stamps using potatoes! For this project you will need: medium-large russet potatoes, something to carve with, a butter knife or carving tools or small cookie cutter will work too, paint tempera or acrylic, something to stamp on- you can use paper, or if you want to use a plain t-shirt, tea towel, or bandanna, just make sure to use acrylic paint or fabric paint if you're stamping on fabric so it won't wash off!

Wednesday, June 17th  - (Our last day of school! Field Day!)
Morning Work Time- 9-11am

• 9:00 Morning Planning Time with Ms. Melissa -Join Ms. Melissa as she walks your child through planning their day with the help of a visual schedule. 
• Outside lesson with Ms. Melissa-  Grateful Tiger
• Thematic curriculum with Ms. Melissa- Family Field Day!  Check your packets for everything you need to create your very own family field day, including signs for activities, decorations, and even metals for the winners you can make out of chocolate bars!  I will post a video in the morning talking about all of the fun we can have “together” for our super fun end of the year celebration!
• No morning lessons: Field day
• Kindergarten Mtg- 9:00-9:30 

• Gardening with Ms. Katherine-  We will take a tour of the garden and see what has been growing. We will also make Wildflower seed balls! To make them you will need: scrap paper, blender, muffin tin, wildflower seeds or garden greens like lettuce, spinach, arugula, dill or cilantro would work too. 

Zoom Circle Time with Ms. Sunanda- 
Today we will celebrate our awesome school year together! We will sing and dance in our colorful costumes and share memories that we have made this school year

Drive Through Kindergarten Move on/up ceremony!  Join us as we go live on Facebook as our staff and faculty line the driveway as we celebrate our Kindergarteners while they “drive through” socially distant style.  CONGRATULATIONS KINDERGARTENERS!!!
