An experienced environmental educator, Elementary teacher, Mr. Shawn, will lead this special program for EC students. Class size is limited. Teachers and students may change weekly. Please note that outdoor Camp happens rain or shine. On rainy days, we will seek shelter, but kids should be ready for all-weather outdoor time. We will have a dedicated indoor classroom space to use for bathroom and hand washing. Kids can count on having lots of fun and learning! Each week has a specific theme for lessons and exploration full of interesting and engaging activities, including silent hikes, yoga, meditation, scavenger hunts, birding, plant and animal identification, stories, non-touch group games, and so much more! This program will take place over 9 weeks. Each week is its own session. 2021 Sessions and Themes for Earth Keepers
June 28- July 2 (Week 1): nature relationships
During this week we will explore the relationships between animals, plants, fungi and other living creatures. Using the land and other materials, we will be looking at: how they interact with each other, how they help each other and how they can even harm each other. We will also look around our campus to see some of these relationships and see which organisms don’t belong here.
JULY 6-9 (week 2): Oneness with nature
We will take this time to explore our campus to see how we, as humans, interact with the Nature around us and to see how MCH has used the natural resources all around us to create a warm, inviting place for all of us to learn and play. We will also take some time to look at how cultures in the past have become one with Nature.
JULY 12-16 (week 3): mythology
We will read myths from different parts of the world and find how they are similar. We will talk about what myths are and why people told these stories. By creating myths of our own, we will also better understand why and how these stories came to be.
JULY 19-23 (week 4): earth & Dirt
This week we will just get dirty! We will spend a lot of time digging into the ground to discover what lives there. Also, by understanding what “dirt” and “soil” are, we will start to develop a deeper understanding of the Earth and how life began and continues to thrive in it.
JULY 26-30 (WEEK 5): water
Let’s talk about water! Water is slow, powerful, and everywhere. We will spend understanding where water comes from, different kinds of water, and why it is so important to human beings. We will also enjoy weather in all of its glory by holding races and contests as we try to outsmart water itself.
AUGUST 2-6 (WEEK 6): math & Engineering in nature
We will spend this week counting, examining and getting to know the Nature around us through the wonderful world of mathematics and engineering. We’ll find patterns and try to make our own and discover how Nature has influenced humans as they design shelter, camouflage and even machines. By building and creating using what is around us, we will become better friends with our most important neighbor.
AUGUST 9-13 (week 7): outdoor skills
We’ll start by unfolding maps and discovering which way is North. We’ll study maps, create maps, and maybe even become maps! Students will learn how to use and read a compass, navigate our way around campus and make maps of their own. Then, by studying the marks animals leave behind, we’ll learn to find, hear, and track the animals in our own backyard. We may even discover fire!
AUGUST 16-20 (WEEK 8): Birds!
This week, our brains will take flight on wings of imagination while we learn about our flying friends all around us. By observing the birds we see on campus, we’ll start to understand MCH’s bird population and what they are doing here. Students will learn about the life cycles of birds and what they need to survive. We’ll watch them eat, fly, build nests, and maybe even fight!
AUGUST 23 - 27 (WEEK 9): incredible invertebrates
Come explore Mr. Shawn’s favorite subject, insects! We’ll hunt and track every crawling creature we can find. This includes our mollusk friends, the slugs and snails. We’ll find out why pill bugs roll up, the difference between millipedes and centipedes and why the yellow spotted millipede makes that smell.

2021 Sessions and Themes
June 28- July 2 & July 6-9 (week 1 & 2): Art & Science in my backpack
This session, campers explore native plants and animals and learn about the life cycle of various specimens in the Pacific Northwest. We will study the various adaptations plants and animals use to their advantage and how that helps contribute to their survival and reproduction.
july 12-16 & July 19-23 (week 3 & 4): Ecosystems and microclimates
These weeks campers explore native plants and animals to learn about their roles in our campus forest and wetland ecosystems. We will study the various adaptations plants and animals use to their advantage and how that helps contribute to their survival and reproduction. We will collect information about the microclimates and investigate why certain organisms thrive in specific locations.
july 26-30 & august 2-6 (week 5 & 6): art in nature
This week, campers will immerse themselves in flower pressing, textile stamping using fruits and vegetable, and learn how to ID plants and trees using texture, color and shape. Campers will also be invited to bring a white clothing item from home for our tie-dye day!
august 9-13 & August 16-20 (Week 7 & 8): navigating the earth and sky
Campers study maps and use their new skills to map out campus trails to hikes. We will also study types of maps, and how to navigate the night sky. Campers will take turns bringing home a sky journal to build a collaborative experience of stargazing.
August 23 - 27 (week 9): celebrating art and nature
Campers will spend the week designing, planning and creating a nature-immersion end of week celebration, full of fun activities, obstacle courses, nature-based decorations, and much more.
