I would like to welcome you all to the 2013-2014 school year. In Lila classroom we have been adjusting to the daily rhythm and routine. To aide this, I have frequently been giving group lessons at circle concerning some basic classroom expectations (e.g. how to respectfully walk around another's work space, the steps of unpacking/packing and cleaning a lunch space, and how to respectfully get another's attention). These foundational skills for how to be an independent and thoughtful member of a community help to set the tone for a peaceful classroom setting for the coming year.
Throughout September Lila classroom has been learning about different emotions, what they feel like and how to recognize them in others. A favorite activity has been to use an emotions work consisting of pictures of children's faces expressing various emotions accompanied by a mirror into which the children could practice making the same emotion appear on their own face in the mirror. We also have frequently been singing a song about emotions "You Can Tell How I Feel When You Look At My Face". Coming up in October, we will be learning about fruit (namely apples) and the role they play in a plant's life cycle. We will be having an apple taste test and voting for a favorite. We are looking forward to some cooking projects involving fruit too.
