Welcome to the Anaranjado School at Home Information Page
Learning is experiential and social for children in their Middle School years, as they develop their independence and autonomy. As we prepare to complete the academic year in this School at Home format, we are deeply committed to meeting each child’s developmental and learning needs to the best of our ability. It is important that the children’s activities and work during this time be enjoyable, thoughtful, challenging, and rewarding. Our goal is to partner closely with families in order to create opportunities for that to happen, and I encourage parents to stay in close contact as we navigate this experience together.
anaranjado daily schedule
9:00: Students log on and check in by posting in the classroom group chat. Once everyone is signed in, students will have a community meeting through Teams, led by the week’s facilitator student. Speaking of which, students will rotate through the meeting roles each week, just like normal, with a meeting facilitator, music selector and challenge selector. Check in with your child at the beginning of the week to see which role they have for that week.
9:20-12:00: Open class time for students and teacher. This will vary day to day, but this is the time when I will give new lessons through video chat. After a lesson, students will type up and show me their “to-do” plan for the morning that they can check off as they work. This will take the place of checking off assignments on the study guides in person, though the study guides will still be placed in their respective channels (Social World, Math, etc.).
During this time, students should be logged in and available to respond to teacher and classmate, unless they have been previously excused from class. This does not apply to using the bathroom or getting a snack, as long as they aren’t away for more than 10-15 min. Students should set their status to away for these brief breaks, so the class knows they are not available.
12:00-12:30: Lunch
1:00-1:20: Personal Reflection/quiet time – Students should find a distraction- free spot to rest for 20 min. During this time, they can silently rest, draw, read, meditate, etc. No technology, please.
12:30-1:00: Movement break guided by me. This will be a fun way to help the students stay active while learning from home.
1:20-2:00: Open class time, except for the following: scheduled 1:1 lessons, pre- scheduled Odyssey scene rehearsals, partner work and personal research projects.
2:00-3:00 Specialist classes will take place at this time with the following schedule:
3:00-3:45: Open Class Time End of Day Wrap-up
Students to clean up/reset their work area, just as they would their classroom!

Program specific needs
To participate fully, students will need a dedicated computer as well as a reliable internet connection. With that being said, we understand that there are potential technology limitations and want to address those. If a family will have difficulty regularly accessing the internet, please let the school know immediately. There are potential back-up plans that can be implemented, including mailing USB drives with documents, additional phone calls for lessons, and more. It is important to let us know as soon as possible if technology limitations become a concern for your family.

week 6: April 20-24, 2020
Hello Middle School students and families!
Welcome to the week of April 20-24th, including one of the most special days of the year, Earth Day! This year’s celebration on Wed, 4/22, is especially important, as this is the 50th Anniversary. One thing I’m grateful for this Earth Day is that in midst of humans having to stay home, the wildlife of the Earth is flourishing, with wonderful tails. I encourage you to do a search and see some of the amazing things that happen when humans are not around.
This week, students will focus on their second and final partner project for Natural World. This project is based on a deeper study of our lesson last week on the 3 Domains and 4 Kingdoms of classification. They will also be working on their individual projects on creating a poem, riddle or ode about a virus, bacterium or Protista. The guidelines and rubric for this project are posted in the Natural World Teams channel.
Students were also introduced to Soundtrap last week in Theater. Their work this week is to record themselves performing a short piece of their own writing. This is an exploratory project to get them used to the software, which we’ll be using for our Odyssey Radio Drama! Have a great week!

week 7 April 27- May 1, 2020
Hello Anaranjado Families!
Welcome to the week of April 27th-May 1st, 2020. I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to believe that Friday is the first day of May! Well, at least May brings even nicer weather, with open windows and fresh air (which should be cleaner with less traffic out there!). In any case, I hope you are all holding up well and that everyone is healthy. Please remember my virtual door is nearly always open, and I am hear to help with making School at Home as comfortable and meaningful as possible for your family.
This week, students will continue working on their second and final partner project for the last session of Natural World for Semester 1. Students were introduced to the new Language unit on Poetry, specifically the world of Haiku. Students have several new individual assignments to work on for this new unit and should explore the study guide thoroughly.
Finally, I’m working on creating a mini-Ted Talk style lineup for the students. I’m interested in hearing from folks who would like to share what they do and why they do it; all professions are welcome. The main goal is to share with students not only what different jobs are like, but the decisions and paths taken that lead to choosing one’s profession. My hope is to host one of these talks 1-2 times/mo. So, if you or someone you know would like to participate, please drop me a line, and have a great week!

Hello Anaranjado Families!
Welcome to the week of May 4th - 8th, 2020. I hope you and your family are doing well and finding new ways to stay home and healthy. As we enter fully into May, I’m looking forward to seeing our garden grow and to having windows open all day long!
I have two exciting announcements…first, that MCH students are officially launching a school newspaper! We spoke with the students about it yesterday during our typical theater meeting, and wow were they into it! We still have quite a bit of set up to do, but we’re getting the ball rolling, and the students were tasked with taking the weekend to consider how they’d like to be involved.
At the middle school level, we will focus on journalism as a profession, including looking at ethics, interviewing skills, investigative journalism and more, incorporating what they learn into their work on the newspaper. Stay tuned for details on this, and be sure to ask your child to share things with you as they develop!
The second announcement is that we are officially going live with our new live professionals series, which I am calling Dream Big: A Spotlight on Interesting and Unique Professions. Our first presenter is a good friend of mine named Ryan Smith. Ryan’s an emergency veterinarian as well as a professional beekeeper and honey farmer, and will be going live with us on Tuesday, though I’m still working out what time is best for his schedule. It should be fun and interesting, and you are welcome to join us if interested!
This week, students will finish and present their second partner project for Natural World. They’ll also revise and present original haiku. As we move on from Haiku, we will begin studying Shakespeare’s sonnets. Additionally, they will explore and begin to settle into their roles in the new school newspaper, and that work is as yet unknown until they choose.
Finally, I would like to offer a chance to meet via Zoom or Teams with you and your child for an updated Goal-setting Conference. This is a chance to check in, talk about what’s working, what could be better, and set some goals for our final six weeks in the school year. Please let me know what day and time works for you and your family next week or the week after. Happy May Day, I hope you have a great weekend!

Hello Anaranjado Families!
Welcome to the week of May 11th - 15th, 2020! With this beautiful weather, I hope you and your family are (safely) enjoying the newly re-opened parks and trails this weekend, and that it is full of relaxation and quality family time.
Students should be proud their work on the OurEcho biodiversity contest, and especially in the way they have supported one another through the process. Now, without any expectations otherwise, the students in the unchosen groups have pledged to work with the Invasive Ivy Squad towards winning one of the grand prizes! No matter the outcome, the impact they will have on the school and campus will be a legacy unto itself.
Students have finished turning in applications for the new school newspaper, and boy are they great! It’s been so fun to read through them, and we are nearly ready to announce the roles. This will happen on Monday morning in the Turquesa and Anaranjado morning meetings, and the 6th and 7th grade students will have their first journalism class that day at 2 pm with Ms. Angela and myself.
Our first Dream Big presentation was a great success! Ryan Smith, professional beekeeper and personal friend, dressed up in his bee suit and explained the somewhat complex process of raising bees and making/selling honey. With assistance from his young son, he gave the students a tour of the beehive he keeps on his property, explaining that there were over 40,000 bees in that hive alone! It was informative, interesting and the students asked some great questions. I am grateful for the suggestions and friends you have shared so far and encourage you to keep doing so! We have a few people I am working with to determine scheduling and will announce the next presentation in the coming days.
Please let me know when you would like to schedule a goal-setting conference with you and your child this week. This call will help your child assess how things are going and to make a plan for the remainder of the school year. It should be fun and interesting to hear their perspective and to work together to make a plan. With only four families, I have quite the availability! My only times not possible are 4-5 pm each day, as well as 2-3 pm on Monday. I look forward to hearing from you soon, and hope you have a wonderful week!

Week 10: May 18-20, 2020
Hello Anaranjado Families!
Welcome to the week of May 18th - 20th, 2020! As a reminder, next week is short, with Wednesday being our last day. We hope you’re able to fill those extra days off school with quality family time! School will return on Tuesday, May 26th.
Students applied and were selected for newspaper roles, and we were happily able to give each of the middle school students who applied, a position they desired! They are all in some form of editorial role, and will begin receiving lessons in journalism once a week. We are all so excited to see what they produce, and will send the first issue out to you very soon!
With it being a short week, we will focus on wrapping up projects and presenting, with the goal of starting our final unit of curriculum when we return on the 26th. Please let me know if you have any questions and enjoy the long upcoming weekend!

Week 11: May 26-29, 2020
Hello Anaranjado Families!
Welcome to the week of May 26-29th, 2020!
I hope you had a lovely, relaxing weekend filled with conversation and exploration. For the rest of the school year, students will be given a variety of options for each subject. They will be expected to select and complete 1-2 of each option each week, though due dates can be flexible depending on the level of complexity in the student’s project. They will still receive regular, ongoing math lessons individually, and language lessons will be built into the journalism class as well as their work in other specialist classes. Students will also be working on a final assessment or project for Social World and Natural World, and these will be due a week from this coming Friday.
If you haven’t heard, the newspaper is off and running! Each of your children has an important role in this new endeavor, and we can’t wait to see what they do with it. The first deadline is Tuesday, May 26th, at which point the editors will begin to look through submissions sent in from students and families. We are hoping to have the first issue out next week, so stay tuned!
