Welcome to the Morado School at Home Information Page
Learning is experiential and social for children in their Elementary years, as they develop their independence and autonomy. As we prepare to complete the academic year in this School at Home format, we are deeply committed to meeting each child’s developmental and learning needs to the best of our ability. It is important to us that the children’s activities and work during this time be enjoyable, thoughtful, challenging, and rewarding. Our goal is to partner closely with families in order to create opportunities for that to happen, and we encourage parents to stay in close contact with their child’s teachers as we navigate this experience together.
Morado daily schedule
Maintaining a regular routine and schedule is important for a child’s wellbeing during this time. We've created the following schedule to help students and families to stay in sync with their community. We also recognize that every family is experiencing this time differently, and this schedule should be seen as flexible.
9:00-10:00 Organization and preparing for the day.
During this window of time, students, with the help of their parents, should log onto Teams, check for scheduled lessons, connect with their teachers in their individual Chat groups, and plan their days.
Students also go to the Attendance Channel on Teams and post a “good morning” reply to Mr. Shawn's attendance post as a way of signaling their arrival at school for the day.
10:00-12:00 Open class time
Students do individual and collaborative work and have lessons from teachers. Lessons are offered through the Morado Teams site and Zoom by your child's teachers.
12:00-1:00 Lunch (with possible read aloud from teacher) and outdoor break time.
***Please note that on Wednesdays, this in the end of the School at Home day.
1:00-3:00 Open class time and scheduled group and individual lessons. Afternoons are a great time for practical life activities and/or physical activity and outside time.
3:00-3:30 End of day jobs, including clean up from the day, pack work away, tidy learning spaces so that everything is ready for tomorrow.

Morado program expectations
Students are expected to:
- Plan and organize work with guidance and support from parents and teachers
- Follow teachers’ guidelines and academic expectations

Parents are invited to:
- Observe your child and communicate with teachers. Ms. Mary has more guidance on this, so click here.
- Maintain a prepared School At Home environment
- Establish a consistent routine and work schedule together
- Follow along with the teachers’ suggested activities to maintain skills and concepts
- Provide opportunities for your child to share and present work to you
- Communicate frequently with teachers in order to build a collaborative partnership.
Lower Elementary Teachers will:
- Prepare and offer a variety of lessons in all subject and activities for children to complete at home in order to maintain and move their learning forward
- Encourage children to follow their passions and interests while providing guidance to parents about how to support children’s individual needs. Examples of this may include projects, journals, creative writing, geometry constructions, Practical Life at home.
- Communicate regularly and frequently with parents, including frequent video calls, Teams chat check ins and quick responses to parents concerns that are communicated via emails or Teams (within one school day).
- Maintain a collaborative, responsive, flexible approach to helping each family navigate the digital learning environment according to individual needs and interests
- Respect the stage of development—many Lower Elementary students are at a “concrete level” and require the Montessori materials to complete certain tasks

week 6: April 20-24, 2020
Greetings Morado students and families,
Welcome to our new class webpage! A special thank you to Ms. Nicole and Ms. Angela for their work getting this up and running. We hope that this will be a simplified helpful guide to navigating School at Home.
In looking at the Week 6 schedule, we’d like to make you aware of the plan for Earth Day on Wednesday. It is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and, following our annual tradition, we are planning to recognize Earth Day during School at Home.
In the Upper School we typically celebrate Earth Day by spending the entire school day outside (rain or shine) engaged in service projects, environmental education and awareness activities, and time to appreciate the natural world around us. We are approaching the day similarly and are asking students to spend their usual work time unplugged from their computers and Teams and instead engaged in activities aimed to help our planet and connect with nature. In thinking about Wednesday, feel free to come up with ideas for how you’d like to spend that day and we will also offer a menu of possible activities and resources. We look forward to hearing about how you spend Earth Day!
We wish you all the best and look forward to Week 6 together.
Ms. Mary, Mr. Ben, and Mr. Robin

Students and parents can meet with him if they have any questions, thoughts, or want to share what they learned or did for a follow-up from the lesson.
On Tuesday morning, Ms. Mary will experiment with keeping a video meeting open for anyone to join and ask for a lesson or conversation. You may schedule a particular appointment ahead of time with her and join the open video meeting at that time, if you wish. We will publish the video meeting session invite in the Announcements channel on the Morado Teams site.

Hello Families,
We are eager to connect personally with your family. We will be scheduling some one-on-one meetings with students and parents this week and next for families that are interested. Thanks for everyone who took some time to fill it out the survey; it really helps us know what to focus on and improve on in this new situation that we are all in.
Recently, we have been trying to squeeze in as many Math lessons as possible on Monday, but it has been cutting a lot of our time short because of it. So, we will be doing Math lessons on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings to give us more time to focus with each student. Some other lesson highlights for this week are the Pronoun Key Experience lessons with Mr. Ben. The Pronoun lesson introduces the part of speech and will have some extensions or follow-ups for the students to do during the week. Ms. Mary will give more geometry and geography lessons with small groups of students on Thursday.
We are excited to be hosting an all-class meeting with the students on Wednesday at 9:30 to give appreciations. This is something we did every week at school, and we are hoping to get as many students in the meetings as possible to help connect them some more. Also, we may get an opportunity to learn about Ramadan with a special presentation.
All our best,
Mr. Ben, Ms. Mary, and Mr. Robin

Hello Families,
We hope you are all getting a welcomed dose of sunshine this weekend. It’s hard to believe we have been at this long enough that we are rolling into Week 9 of School at Home. Thank you all for your support, engagement, feedback, and hard work along the way. Here’s a look at what’s ahead this week.
Lessons for all students to be aware of this week include a botany lesson about the parts of a leaf with Mr. Ben and more geometry and geography with Ms. Mary.
We have heard from many first-year students and their families about wanting more social time to connect with peers. Mr. Shawn and Ms. Jessie, two of the Upper Elementary teachers, have volunteered to lead small group art activities to provide opportunities for socializing and connecting. These will be offered on Teams every day except Wednesday from 12:30-1:00.
Passion Project news! Based on feedback from families and discussions among the teaching team, we have made a final decision on when Passion Projects will be due and how to best present them. The most equitable and manageable process will be for everyone to film their presentations/displays at home and send the video to a teacher. We are happy to help in the video-taping process, so please don’t hesitate to ask. As we get closer to the date, teachers will offer guidance and suggestions on ways to record and send the video. The videos of the Passion Projects are due by Friday, June 12. Feel free to send in the video any time before then. Over that weekend, we will edit them all together and then host a watch party on Monday, June 15.
Wishing a happy Mother’s Day to all maternal folks out there! You are amazing!
All our best,
Mr. Ben, Ms. Mary, and Mr. Robin
This Week’s All-Class/Ongoing Events:
Birthday Circle: This Friday, May 15 will have our first Birthday Circle over Zoom. We will be celebrating students with March and April birthdays. The Zoom link will be posted next week. We will take turns saying our hopes and wishes for each of the birthday students. All students are welcome to join us at 9:30.
Daily lunch read aloud with a teacher from 12:00-12:30 (optional). We will be reading from Wayside School Gets a Little Stanger.
Sharing is on Wednesday at 11:30. Links are on the calendar and the “Week 9” channel.
Spelling: List #22a: Spelling this week is about words with added suffixes.
Please make sure that if your child does Spelling that they meet with either a teacher on Monday and Friday by following the Calendar invites or do both a pre-test and post-test at home with another person. The lists and some practice activities are in the Classroom Materials channel under the Spelling folder.
Rocket Math
Each child should also be doing Rocket Math practice at least 4 times a week.
Families have two choices for how to do Rocket Math.
This Week’s Curriculum Plan:
Monday
Individual and partner math lessons with teachers (will continue throughout the week with individual appointments).
Tuesday
Botany Lesson: Parts of a Leaf
Mr. Ben will post a video of this botany lesson on Tuesday to watch along with extensions and follow-up work to do during the week. He will be online during the morning if anyone has any questions or is ready to share their work with him. Students won’t need to bring anything while watching the lesson.
Coding with Mr. Ben:
Half of the 2nd and 3rd years are invited to do some coding with Mr. Ben on Tuesday afternoon using Code.org’s Sprite Lab. Links will be sent out during the first lesson.
Wednesday
9:30 Community Gathering on Zoom (see Calendar on Teams for Zoom invite)
We had a great turnout last week for our Community Gathering. If your child is interested, we are going to do a group meeting with the class and offer appreciations and any announcements.
11:30 Sharing (see Calendar on Teams for invite)
Thursday
Ms. Mary will give lessons on an individual basis, on a variety of geography and geometry topics. As Montessori school, we believe it’s important to allow some breathing room. This week is a great opportunity for a child to get a lesson that they missed, talk about their work and interests with Ms. Mary, linger for a little longer over a new idea, or do deeper independent work on a topic that they’ve been introduced to. The Classroom Materials section on Teams and Suggestions for Other Ongoing Work (see below) are great resources, as is Ms. Mary and the other teachers.
Coding with Mr. Ben:
The other half of the 2nd and 3rd years are invited to do some coding with Mr. Ben on Thursday afternoon using Code.org’s Sprite Lab. Links will be sent out during the first lesson.
Friday
March/April Birthday Circle at 9:30 on Zoom.
Literature Circles with Ms. Mary. There is a new document in the Literature Circle channel under files called “May Literature Circle Books.” There are some old titles along with new ones. These are “rolling” literature circles: you choose a book and meet with that group weekly until you are done reading it, then you choose another book to read. Filling out the “Literature Circle Tree” document is meant to be a tool to help students recall details from the book and aid them in lit circle discussions. Please let the teachers know early in the week which book you are reading (in the chat for you and the teachers.) Look for the event invite in the Calendar on Teams.
Suggestions for Other Ongoing Work:

week 10: May 18-20, 2020
Hello Morado Families,
As we look ahead to Week 10 we would like to start by expressing our gratitude for everyone that makes up our community and the ongoing efforts that you are all putting into supporting your child’s experience with School at Home. Nothing about it is easy, but together we continue to get better and pave new pathways. This resonated last Friday afternoon at the “Odyssey Episode 1 Listening Party” where a large part of our Upper School community listened with joy to the polished creation they’ve been working on together for weeks. You can listen to Episode 1 here:
https://www.mchkids.com/school-at-home-with-mch.html
Please note that Week 10 is a shortened week. There is no school on Thursday and Friday or the following Monday (Memorial Day). We hope the extended weekend provides you all with an opportunity to find balance in your lives.
Lessons for all students to be aware of this week include a grammar lesson about conjunctions with Mr. Ben and more science lessons with Ms. Mary.
We are still developing the idea of how to provide extra time for the first years to meet with each other during the day. Ms. Jessie and Mr. Shawn are going to start using Zoom for the 12:30-1:00 first year meeting and divide them by two groups based on a topic of interest. So, one day it might be about Legos and Cats and the students can follow their preference and chat with a teacher and classmates about them. This is still a work in progress so any information on how the first years are feeling and ideas of how to change it is always welcomed.
If you are planning to have your child do school-work during the days off, please try and focus on Passion Projects. We are also planning to focus more on them the week we are back.

We enjoyed hearing and thinking about where we’ve been as a community and what has stood out from the year as we head into our last month of school. We were also grateful to have a presentation during our gathering about Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr by a Morado parent and two of our students. As part of the presentation they posted follow up activities including a word search and suggestions for random acts of kindness. Both can be found on the Morado “Week 10” channel.

Week 12: June 1-5, 2020
Hello Morado,
We’re headed into June and our last two and a half weeks of school. As we find each week when writing this we are filled with gratitude for our community and are looking forward to finishing the year strong together. During the next few weeks, we will be scheduling time for reflection on the school year and portfolio work, as we would in the classroom, as well as opportunities to connect in small groups and large with classmates through games and other activities.
As you plan for Week 12 we’d like to remind everyone about a few important details related to Passion Projects.
For Week 12...
Tuesday will be another opportunity for students to share their work on either the timeline of a year or timeline of a human need. If they need to focus on the passion project instead, they can come and enjoy other people’s presentations without doing one themselves.
Lessons for all students to be aware of this week include a biology lesson about the parts of fruit with Mr. Ben and more science and geometry lessons with Ms. Mary.
Literature Circles: Please note that we will not be meeting for literature circles for the remainder of the year. Students are encouraged to finish the books they’re reading but don’t need to choose another lit circle book to discuss for June.
