We had very exciting week in Morado. We continued with our usual weekly lessons with several special events that we learned a lot from.
We had our first holiday circle for this year. A special thanks to Mr. Salman (Aamina’s Dad, 3rd grade) for talking to us about the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. Our class learned a lot and had many questions about how Aamina’s family celebrates. We had another holiday circle this week, with Ms. Khavitha, the Upper Elementary assistant talked to us about the Indian holiday of Diwali, the festival of lights. Students enjoyed learning about the story of Diwali and what people do to celebrate it. We also had the Pacific Science Center come to our school on Tuesday and brought dozens of small hands-on experiments on rocks and geology. It was a blast to get to try many different things about what makes rocks so incredible. We also learned about volcanoes, earthquakes, and fossils. Next week, we have School Pictures on Friday, October 31st. Check your child’s folders for their spelling words and important information about School Pictures. Please remember that we still don’t allow candy or costumes at school, even on Halloween. We will be having a spooky lunch on Friday, where we will have a cozy story time with some slightly spooky stories to read while we eat lunch. We have been getting a lot of questions about of classroom Wishlist. It is finally completed and it is attached to this email. We are sorry it took this long to get it out to the community. We also would like to invite all parents to our Parent Education Night on Wednesday, Novemeber 5th, from 6-8. We will be discussing different Hands-On lessons that we use in the classroom and how important it is to learn through different experiences One last thing, we would like to announce that we have 2 new students joining our classroom community on Monday. Their names are Rowen and Sam and they are both first graders and we are excited to have them join our class.

Happy 1st week of October! First of all, I’m excited to be at MCH and in Morado working with all students and their families. It was wonderful to have such productive PT conferences and to get to know families on a more personal level. Thank you for all your input.
Now that spelling assessments are complete you should be seeing the lists coming home in your child’s take home folder. Practicing with them will insure their success and we do appreciate the work you do with them at home. Classroom math assessments are also complete and we have started your child in the appropriate math materials for his/her greatest success in math. Speaking of math... 2nd and 3rd grade students have started Rocket Math. Reading assessments have been taking place for the past few weeks. As these assessments take a significant amount of time, compiling the information following the assessments, takes time as well. Be sure to watch for the results of next week's completed reading assessment. Starting next week through March, Morado and Turquesa will be utilizing the beautiful kitchen area (Café) and learning more about food prep and cooking. Ms Khavitha has volunteered to lead this learning opportunity and we are excited about that. This week in Morado: 1st grade students continue to practice and gain knowledge in place value using the golden beads. All students learned about, or were refreshed, on the suffix and enjoyed the follow up work that we started. It was Geometry for everyone on Wednesday which was exciting for all three grades! 1st graders had fun learning the scalene, equilateral, and isosceles triangles. Our follow up work consisted of sand! So… if you want to know more about that fun follow up work, pick your child’s brain! 2nd grade learned abou the parts of a straight line (line, segment, ray, and points of origin). We played a fun description guessing game and their chosen follow up work is to make a set of 3 part cards. 3rd graders were refreshed in the “Parts of an Angle – the 1st five angles). I want to make sure that these things are solid before moving on so Geometry can always be fun in Morado. Things to come in Morado: Next week Kindergarten-Elementary Buddies kicks off. Elementary students have been paired with a Kindergarten student and will form a relationship through letter-writing, classroom visits, reading and much more. I’m excited to watch that friendship and bond grow, which in turn grows both “buddies”. If you haven’t signed up for your parent observation time, watch for the email regarding that. We are really looking forward to this year and all the exciting learning that awaits. Please reach out to us with any questions, concerns or comments. We really enjoy hearing from you because it always helps us become a stronger community of support for your child! Have a wonderful weekend and we'll see you next week! Ms. Carol & Mr. Ben |
