n addition to our day to day work, February has proven to be a month of compassion, love and kindness in our classroom. We had a merry time preparing our Valentine exchange.
The school had a pennies for peace drive and we have set up a "Pennies for peace” jar on our peace shelf in which we are able to actually see the pennies being collected in our classroom. In addition to being a visual representation, the jar encourages spontaneous acts of love and kindness. We are thrilled to see how much the children love and care for one another. Children collect pennies while learning important lessons about cultural understanding, experiencing the rewards of sharing and working together to bring hope and educational opportunities to children in Central Asia. A penny in United States may have little worth, but in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan just a few pennies can buy a pencil and open the door to literacy. We read the book "Listen to the Wind" to help understand what the concept meant. The children also had a fun time making fruit pizza for the cooking project of the month. As we move forward in March, our unit study will be exploring the outer space and knowing about the other planets. Can’t wait to begin!!
