February was marked by snow days at the beginning, a delayed start due to snow at the end, and mid-winter break in the middle, yet Amarillo students were busy with their learning and work on all the days in between. We looked at the polar regions of the planet and discussed ways that animals keep warm in their cold climate. One morning, we huddled like penguins, and another, we put our hands into a bag of shortening in ice to understand how blubber works. The children enjoyed the giving and receiving of valentines on Valentine’s Day, and weekly art lessons and gardening sessions have been very popular.
We also had our conference days in February, and it was a pleasure to meet with you all to discuss your child’s progress. It is a privilege to work with each of them and I so appreciated being able to connect with you. We will not have conferences again this year, but I am always available through email should you have any questions or concerns. In March we will take a look at the world when dinosaurs lived on it. We will also enjoy seasonal celebrations, and a Montessori celebration, for which your child is preparing a song to perform, will be held on the morning of March 18th. It should be a great time! We are busy looking for the first signs of spring as the month begins and we will continue to enjoy them as spring officially begins on March 21st.

The month of January saw the children returning from the holidays happy to renew their friendships and eager to try new challenges.
We studied the earth, and made models of the layers of the earth. We learned what causes earthquakes, and learned about the parts of volcanoes. The children learned the word “dormant” in describing the volcanoes in our state! We enjoyed a presentation from Adib’s mom, Ms. Mahtab, on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and why he is so special to their family. We also introduced “love lights”: an outward sign of the pride or joy that a child might feel during their day. In February, in addition to celebrating Valentine’s Day, we will be studying the polar regions of the planet. Happy New Year! The month of December in Amarillo was short but busy. We finished our study of the solar system and completed our art projects of the planets, learned about the holidays of Hanukkah and Christmas, and enjoyed extra activities like a morning of preparing fruit kabobs, and story time with different parents.
The cold weather meant shorter recesses, but thank you, parents, for ensuring that your child was well-equipped to face the cold playground each day. Please remember that hats and gloves or mittens can easily go astray, so please put your child’s name on any item of clothing they bring to school. And if your child has begun to refer to their knitted hat as a “tuque”, that was me bringing a little bit of Canadian jargon into the classroom! In the month of January we are looking at our planet, Earth, including an examination of the layers of the earth, volcanoes, and geographical landforms. We will also be learning about Dr. Martin Luther King and having peace-related lessons as we discuss why his teachings are important to remember. |
